If you’ve noticed the water level in your pool dropping, or that you constantly have to increase the amount of water in it, you could have a leak.
This problem is not only very frustrating, it can also cost you in high water bills, faster surface breakdown, and could lead to sinkholes if water continues to seep into the ground. As a pool owner, checking for leaks regularly is a good practice.
However, how can you tell if your pool is leaking or if it’s just losing water due to evaporation? Well let us show you a free and very simple test called the “Bucket Test”. It’s an easy test you can perform to determine if it’s leaking or just evaporating.
BUCKET TEST
PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
- 1. Fill the pool to the normal operating level
- 2. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with water approximately 2 to 3 inches from the top
- 3. Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool (you might need to add a brick or two to keep from floating away)
- 4. Use tape to mark the water level on the inside of the bucket and mark the pool level on the outside of the bucket
- 5. Turn the pool on
- 6. Check the water level in 24 hours
- 7. If the pool water has gone down more than the water in the bucket then you have a leak. If the water loss is the same, then it's evaporation
